Oh I can't wait to see the faces on some people that eventually read this article. The word "slay" was around a lot longer than the slang version used with Beyonce or 1970's drag balls. The origin of the word (not slang) came from places such as...
Old English meaning "strike or kill" along with relations in Dutch and German. For that meaning, we are talking about the concept to kill an enemy which applies to why I chose it to be a part of Determin8tor Diaries. We must kill the negativity that is thrown at us and we must SlaytheNay that lives inside us and causes us to have doubts and disbeliefs in our abilities to achieve goals.
Around 1593, the meaning of the word took on a slang version related to "dying of laughter" and in the 1970's as mentioned above, it grew more popular after "Paris is Burning" in the 1990's and reached mainstream status when Beyonce used it in a song:
"Cause I Slay"
Today, the meaning of the word is often used in certain cultures to express: looking confident and good, acting in a self-empowered way, or achieving something that is amazing. This data above comes from Wikipedia.
These are all good ways to use the term but the original definition is the reason the word was chosen. There is a really good definition in Wiktionary which is a literary meaning but really applies to what we are talking about in Determin8tor Diaries: "to eradicate or stamp out" and also "to defeat, to overcome". These are the best definitions for how we use "slay" in SlayTheNay.
"To Eradicate or stamp out" and also "to defeat, to overcome." These are the best definitions for how we use SlayTheNay
Our point is, SlayTheNay stands for:
"killing" the "No's"!
eradicating the negativity inside our heads and out in the world!
defeating the the Naysayers!
We do this by sticking together and by pushing forward no matter what, to achieve our goals. There's no better feeling than achieving something someone else thought couldn't be done. Oh wait, yes there is. Helping someone else through their challenges by sharing your story and supporting them. That is the purpose of Determin8tor Diaries.
